Switching from an iPhone to an Android smartphone, or vice versa, remains a often tedious process. However, Apple is preparing a solution that could change the game: a new framework called AppMigrationKit.
A migration still too complex
Apple's solution: AppMigrationKit
According to 9to5Mac, Apple is developing a new system that will allow a complete transfer of third-party app data between iOS and Android. Specifically, AppMigrationKit will give developers the ability to integrate a local data import/export feature into their apps.
What this will mean for users
When setting up a new smartphone, all data from compatible apps will be transferred in one go. The framework will work with a new “Transfer to Android” option that Apple is currently testing in the iPhone settings.
It should be noted that AppMigrationKit is still in beta and will require iOS 26.1 or iPadOS 26.1. The biggest challenge, however, will be gaining developer adoption. For the system to be effective, developers will need to integrate this framework into their apps, which could take time.
While Apple is finally tackling this tricky issue, users will still need to wait before enjoying a truly seamless migration between the two mobile ecosystems.
