While the iPhone 17 has only just hit the market, rumors about the iPhone 18 are already starting to surface. This time, it’s the heart of Apple’s next smartphone that’s drawing attention, the A20 chip, which will mark the company’s entry into the 2 nm era.

Two variants to cover the entire range

Contrary to fears in recent months, the standard iPhone 18 is not expected to inherit the current A19 chip. According to the well-known leaker Mobile Phone Chip Expert, Apple is indeed preparing two versions of its upcoming chip.

The standard version, internally called “Borneo,” would power the base iPhone 18. The Pro version, named “Borneo Ultra,” would be used in the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and the highly anticipated foldable iPhone.

Good news for future buyers

This strategy is great news for those planning to get the standard iPhone 18, as it will benefit from the latest 2 nm process instead of settling for a previous-generation chip.

While the technical specifications remain a mystery for now, one thing is certain: the A20 chip, in either version, will be the first consumer chip manufactured at 2 nm. This promises a significant boost in both performance and energy efficiency.

Now, we just have to wait to see how Apple plans to leverage this new technology. The race for miniaturization continues, and Apple seems determined to maintain its lead in this field.
