Google has activated an exceptional measure for owners (including Canadians) of Pixel 6a smartphones. A mandatory software update, rolled out on Tuesday, July 8, aims to address an overheating risk affecting certain devices. However, the fix comes with a major drawback: after 400 charging cycles, the battery’s performance will be reduced.
Here’s what users need to know.
Who is affected by the Pixel 6a battery issues?
Only devices identified as “Affected Devices” by Google are impacted. This classification remains unclear: users will need to manually check their eligibility through the official portal (g.co/pixel6a-batteryprogram). The Android 16 update applies to all Pixel 6a units, but the battery limitations will only affect at-risk models.
How does the fix work?
For eligible devices, the fix works in two stages:
At 375 charging cycles, a notification alerts the user.
At the 400th cycle, the maximum battery capacity and charging speed are permanently reduced.
Google justifies this limitation on safety grounds, citing “a potential risk to users.”

Canadian Support Options
Starting July 21, 2025, three solutions are offered:
Free battery replacement at authorized centers (Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver).
Financial compensation (amount varies depending on exchange rates).
Discount voucher for the purchase of a new Pixel on the Google Store.
Critical conditions:
The device must pass a physical inspection (water damage or cracked screen may lead to exclusion).
The standard warranty is not extended after the repair.
Deadline to meet: assistance must be claimed before July 21, 2026.
Owners have until July 21, 2026, to claim assistance. After this deadline, the program expires. Google emphasizes that this support is in addition to Canadian consumer rights and does not replace them.
Our Recommendations
Check your device’s eligibility online immediately.
Back up your data before any visit to a service center.
Prefer in-person drop-off: postal shipment is not available in Canada.
“It’s a responsible, but late response,” comments Élise Tremblay, tech columnist for La Presse. “Users will have to balance safety with loss of battery autonomy.”
