Rogers has announced a one-week delay for the start of its 3G network shutdown, which was originally scheduled for July 31. The transition will now begin on August 7. This decision was communicated through an update on the company’s website. Affected customers are currently being contacted to inform them of this additional delay.

Technical migration terms

Rogers states that subscribers still using 3G devices will be able to migrate to 4G LTE or 5G networks without needing to change their current plan. The carrier is offering a compatible device for $0 if needed. The previously announced penalties (a one-time $75 fee and a $3 monthly surcharge) will not be applied due to this delay.

Regional rollout schedule

The phased shutdown will begin in certain areas of Quebec and the Ottawa region starting August 7. The rest of the Canadian territory will follow later according to a staggered schedule. Rogers has committed to specifically notifying customers before any service interruption occurs in their region.

Technical challenges related to the transition

The phase-out of the 3G network increases reliance on VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology for voice calls. The lack of full standardization across different devices and carriers could impact some users. Phones manufactured before 2019 or purchased outside of Canada face a higher risk of incompatibility, even if they support 4G.
