As the official unveiling of the Galaxy S26 series approaches on February 25, leaks are now focusing on concrete features rather than vague hints. One of the most discussed additions is a new 24MP photo mode, whose behavior has been outlined by the well-known leaker Ice Universe. The idea is simple. Offer higher-resolution images without pushing users toward the more complex Expert Raw app.

A 24MP mode hidden in the settings

Unlike standard photo modes, this new 24MP option will not be enabled out of the box. Users will have to activate it manually through the advanced settings of the Camera Assistant app. Once enabled, it will be available in both Photo and Portrait modes.

There is, however, a clear limitation. When the shutter is pressed, the photo is taken with a delay of about three seconds. This suggests heavier processing in the background and means the mode is clearly not designed for fast-moving subjects or spontaneous shots.

More natural results than Expert Raw

According to Ice Universe, image quality should improve compared to the current 24MP output in Expert Raw. The new mode reportedly avoids excessive sharpening and reduces the risk of color artifacts, two issues sometimes observed in Expert Raw captures.

The result is expected to look more balanced and more natural, with detail that feels less artificial. This once again shows how Samsung continues to refine its image processing through software rather than relying purely on new camera hardware.

An upgrade reserved for the Galaxy S26

The biggest disappointment may come from Samsung’s rollout strategy. Based on the information shared so far, this 24MP photo mode would be exclusive to the Galaxy S26 lineup. Older models would not receive it, even when they use similar camera sensors.

For owners of the Galaxy S25 or S24, this decision is likely to be frustrating. Since the improvement appears to be software-driven, the lack of backward compatibility feels more like a deliberate choice than a technical constraint.

Whether this new 24MP mode will be enough to justify its exclusivity remains to be seen. Its real value will only become clear once users can test it in everyday conditions and decide if the quality gains outweigh the practical limitations.
