Apple has just made a major announcement that will appeal to both everyday Mac users and creative professionals. The company has not only updated its popular Studio Display, but also unveiled a brand-new high-end model: the Studio Display XDR.
These new monitors double down on next-generation connectivity with the arrival of Thunderbolt 5, while bringing significant improvements to display quality and audio.
Here is what you need to know about these new releases, available for pre-order starting tomorrow, March 4.
New Studio Display (Refresh)
The entry-level model retains its 27-inch 5K panel (600 nits) but receives several notable internal upgrades designed for remote work and connectivity:
- Improved Camera: A new 12MP ultra-wide camera featuring Desk View, perfect for video conferencing presentations.
- Boosted Audio: The six-speaker system has been overhauled to deliver 30% deeper bass.
- Thunderbolt 5: This new standard allows for ultra-fast transfer speeds and, crucially, daisy-chaining for up to four displays—a highly requested feature.
The Studio Display XDR: The New Pro Reference
This is where Apple is making a massive leap. This new model appears to replace the older Pro Display XDR in the core pro lineup with impressive specifications:
- Mini-LED Technology: A 27-inch 5K Retina XDR panel with over 2,000 local dimming zones.
- Extreme Brightness: Up to 1,000 nits sustained SDR brightness and a peak of 2,000 nits for HDR content.
- 120Hz Fluidity: The long-awaited arrival of ProMotion technology (adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz) on an Apple desktop display.
- Color Precision: Full support for P3 and Adobe RGB gamuts, as well as DICOM presets for medical imaging.

Pricing and Availability
For now, pricing has been announced in US dollars (official Canadian pricing should follow shortly):
- Studio Display: Starting at $1,599 USD.
- Studio Display XDR: Starting at $3,299 USD.
Pre-orders open on March 4, with in-store availability scheduled for March 11.
