Apple is officially entering the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, the company’s first foldable iPhone. The new device combines a compact 5.4-inch outer display with a much larger 7.6-inch inner display, giving users a regular iPhone experience when closed and a tablet-like workspace when opened.

The iPhone Duo also introduces a new hinge design. The A20 Pro chip, dual batteries, a redesigned version of iOS 27, and camera features built specifically around the foldable form factor.

In Canada, the iPhone Duo starts at $2,999 CAD. Pre-orders begin October 16, with availability starting October 23.

Two Displays in One iPhone

When closed, the iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display designed for comfortable one-handed use. Apple says the outer screen provides about 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro despite the smaller overall size.

Open the phone and the experience changes completely. The 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display is 50 percent larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Giving users considerably more room for video, gaming, web browsing and productivity.

Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

Apple is also using a nano-texture finish on the inner screen to reduce reflections and make the centre crease less noticeable. Apple Pencil with USB-C support is expected later in the year.

iOS 27 Takes Advantage of the Foldable Screen

The iPhone Duo is not simply a larger iPhone. Apple has adapted iOS 27 specifically for the foldable format.

When the phone is opened, users can display two Home Screen pages at once and take advantage of a redesigned interface that makes better use of the additional screen space.

One of the biggest additions is Split View, which lets users run two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time. Users can also open two windows from the same app. And quickly switch between apps and save app pairs they regularly use together.

Apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already being optimized for the new format.

For someone comparing a foldable phone with a conventional flagship, this could be one of the iPhone Duo’s biggest advantages. Instead of simply providing a larger display, Apple is trying to turn that extra space into a more practical multitasking environment.

A20 Pro and a New Cooling System

Inside the iPhone Duo is the same A20 Pro chip used in Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro models.

Because a foldable phone has very different thermal constraints than a traditional smartphone, Apple has developed a new cooling system around a custom vapour chamber.

Apple claims the iPhone Duo can deliver up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The A20 Pro includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine designed to handle increasingly demanding on-device AI workloads.

The phone also uses a new display engine capable of driving the inner and outer screens simultaneously.

Two Batteries Inside

Rather than placing one large battery on one side of the device, Apple has installed one battery in each half of the iPhone Duo.

Software and energy-management algorithms allow the two batteries to operate as a single system.

Apple rates the device for up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, up to 44 hours using the outer display, or up to 24 hours of typical mixed use when both displays are used equally.

Fast charging can bring the battery to around 50 percent in approximately 20 minutes with compatible wired charging. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging are also supported.

Dual 48MP Cameras

The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.

The main camera can capture images at up to 48MP and also provides an optical-quality 2x telephoto option. The Ultra Wide camera supports wider shots and macro photography.

But the more interesting changes come from the foldable design itself.

Users can take selfies using the higher-quality rear cameras while previewing the image on the outer display. Duo Preview can show the person being photographed a live preview so they can adjust their position and framing.

The phone can also be partially folded and placed on a surface for hands-free photos, video or FaceTime calls.

Video recording reaches 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision using the main camera.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence

The iPhone Duo also arrives alongside a major expansion of Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI experience.

Siri AI is designed to understand personal context, information displayed on screen and previous conversations. Users can ask Siri questions about content on their device or use it to perform actions based on what is currently displayed.

The larger inner display also allows users to keep content visible on one side of the screen while interacting with Siri on the other.

Apple Intelligence adds features such as Spatial Reframing, improved Clean Up tools and photorealistic Image Playground generation.

Built for a Foldable Form Factor

Durability is one of the biggest questions surrounding any foldable phone, and Apple appears to have focused heavily on the hinge and display construction.

The iPhone Duo uses a Grade 5 titanium frame and a hinge made from more than 100 individual components. Ceramic Shield protects the rear, while Ceramic Shield 2 is used on the front.

The device also carries an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

For the folding display, Apple uses multiple protective layers, including scratch-resistant material, high-strength glass and a titanium reinforcement plate underneath the panel.

eSIM Only

The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, which allows Apple to free up additional internal space for the battery and other components.

Apple says eSIM is supported by more than 500 carriers globally, including Canadian providers such as Bell, Freedom Mobile and Rogers.

The phone also includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple’s N1 networking chip.

iPhone Duo Price and Release Date in Canada

The iPhone Duo will be available in Star White and Night Sky.

Canadian pricing starts at $2,999 CAD, with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage configurations available.

Pre-orders begin at 5 a.m. PT on October 16, and the first units will become available on October 23.

At nearly $3,000 before taxes, the iPhone Duo clearly sits at the very top of Apple’s smartphone lineup. Its appeal will likely come down to whether users see enough value in the larger folding display, improved multitasking and new camera possibilities to justify the premium.

For Canadians considering the iPhone Duo, the cost of the phone is only part of the equation. Before upgrading, it is worth comparing mobile plans in Canada on PlanHub to find a plan that matches your data needs and budget.
