Bell has reached a major milestone by completing the installation of an undersea fiber optic cable to Fogo Island and Change Islands. The 16-kilometer stretch beneath the Atlantic is expected to transform daily life in these remote Newfoundland communities.
The challenge was significant: bringing high-speed internet to windswept islands where 2,400 residents have long dealt with unreliable connections. The solution came through the ocean floor and a substantial investment made possible with Ottawa’s support via the Universal Broadband Fund.
Perfect timing for tourism
This new infrastructure arrives at just the right moment. These small, traditional communities are undergoing a remarkable transformation, gradually becoming a favorite destination for international travelers. Their approach focuses on sustainable development and authentic hospitality, led by the locals.
But the wait isn’t over yet. Bell is now working on the final step, installing all the necessary equipment to bring the service to homes and businesses. The goal is to launch the first services in fall 2025.
It’s a date the islanders are likely looking forward to after so many years living on the fringes of the digital revolution.
