Has your mobile plan been the same for several years? It may be time to take a closer look.

Someone in our circle, over the age of 70, was still paying around $60 per month for only 6 GB of data. The plan dated back to 2016. Since then, the market has changed, prices have shifted, offers have evolved, and plans with far more data have become much more accessible.

But the provider never proactively suggested a better option.

Worse, instead of updating the plan, the provider sent a notice announcing a $6 monthly increase for the exact same service.

In other words: paying more to stay stuck on an outdated plan.

The Trap of Forgotten Plans

Many people keep the same mobile or internet plan for years. Out of habit. Because they are busy. And the bill is paid automatically. They assume their provider would let them know if a better option existed.

But that is not always what happens.

A customer still paying $60 for 6 GB of 4G data in 2026 can be very profitable for a provider, especially when newer plans now offer much more data for less money. As long as the customer does not ask questions, the system keeps running.

And often, the people affected are the most loyal customers: seniors, busy families, and people who do not shop around for their services every year.

The problem is not only the price. The problem is doing nothing.

What Happened Next

The first reaction was simple: cancel the account.

After calling customer service and explaining that the plan was no longer competitive and that switching providers was being considered, the response came quickly.

A new offer was proposed: 100 GB for $35 per month for two years, with the price locked in, on 5G.

That means going from 6 GB for $60 to 100 GB for $35.

That is a massive difference. And it shows one important thing: sometimes, a better offer already exists, but it is not presented until the customer asks for it.

Why Compare Before Calling?

Before contacting your provider, it is better to know what your plan is actually worth. That is where comparison becomes essential.

On PlanHub.ca, you can compare mobile plans available in your province based on your budget and data needs. In just a few minutes, you can see whether your current plan is still reasonable or whether it belongs to another era.

This small step can completely change the conversation with your provider.

Instead of simply saying, “I think this is expensive,” you can say:

“I compared current offers on PlanHub, and my plan no longer matches the market. What can you offer me before I switch providers?”

That difference matters. You are not calling blindly. You are calling with numbers.

Should Providers Warn Their Customers?

That is the big question.

When a customer has been paying for an outdated plan for years, why does the provider not automatically suggest a better option? Why are new offers often promoted to attract new customers, but not always used to protect existing ones?

The CRTC has strengthened certain rules to better inform consumers, especially around contracts, discounts, and service changes. But in practice, many customers still have to do the verification work themselves.

We created the PlanHub Mobile Price Alert to help you track price drops and receive better offers without having to compare plans every day.

A Simple Tip: Check Once a Year

Your mobile or internet plan should not sit untouched for ten years.

Once a year, take a few minutes to check:

How much you pay each month
How much data you get
Whether your price has increased
Whether new fees have been added
Whether better offers are available elsewhere

If you have parents or grandparents, do it with them too. Many seniors do not think about comparing their plans. They trust their provider, pay their bill, and sometimes remain on offers that are completely outdated.

Comparing their plan can save them hundreds of dollars per year.

And we have an App designed to help with exactly that.

Loyalty Should Not Cost More

A loyal customer should not have to threaten to leave just to get a fair price. And an older customer should not pay more simply because they do not know a better offer exists.

But in today’s market, staying alert matters.

Your old mobile or internet plan may not be a good deal anymore.

Before your next renewal, before accepting a price increase, or before continuing to pay out of habit, take two minutes to compare offers on PlanHub.ca

Your provider knows your habits. Now it is your turn to know your options.
