Galaxy A8 (2017): Full Specifications

Samsung positioned the Galaxy A8 (2017) as a more polished A series model, with a compact body, slim bezels and several features that were once reserved for its higher-end phones. It combines a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED Infinity Display with a sharp 2220 x 1080 resolution, an octa-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, plus microSD expansion for more room. The build pairs 3D glass with a metal frame, and the phone remains easy to handle at 149.2 x 70.6 x 8.4 mm and 172 g. Photography is centred on a 16 MP rear camera with an f/1.7 lens, while the front stands out with a dual 16 MP and 8 MP setup designed for selfies and portrait effects. Samsung also lists a 3000 mAh battery with fast charging, along with useful everyday extras such as USB-C, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, a fingerprint sensor and face recognition. Depending on the version, SIM support can be single-SIM or dual-SIM, and the handset also carries IP68 water and dust resistance.

Pros

  • Selfie cameras: With two front-facing cameras and features like Live Focus, the Galaxy A8 is a great device for taking selfies.
  • Water resistant: The Galaxy A8 is built to protect against any and all water damage.

Cons

  • More front-facing cameras than rear cameras: This seems like an odd choice when designing a smartphone. Most users want stronger cameras for landscapes and scenery shots, not selfies.
  • Age: Years after its release, a number of other Android devices can do much more for a similar price. It's hard to justify the A8 over another specific model, especially when it'll cost you around $650 CAD.
