The iPhone Xr is a 6.1-inch Apple smartphone built around a colorful glass-and-aluminum design, with a Liquid Retina HD LCD that pairs 828 x 1792 resolution, True Tone and wide colour support in a familiar notched format. It runs on Apple’s A12 Bionic chip with Face ID, and it was offered in 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB versions, making it a straightforward option for everyday use, media, messaging and iOS apps without moving to a larger Pro-style device. Its single 12 MP rear camera includes optical image stabilization, Smart HDR, Portrait mode and 4K video recording at up to 60 fps, while the 7 MP TrueDepth front camera supports Face ID, portrait effects and 1080p video. Apple also gave it stereo audio, LTE Advanced, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and dual SIM support through nano-SIM plus eSIM, though eSIM availability depends on region and carrier. The body measures 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3 mm, weighs 194 g and carries an IP67 rating for splash, water and dust resistance. Battery life claims include up to 25 hours of talk time, with fast charging and Qi wireless charging support.

Pros

  • The iPhone XR is very similar to the newer iPhone 11 in specs and performance but is $150 cheaper. Apple is also known for supporting older iPhone models with software and security updates for far longer than many of its Android rivals. If you are willing to buy an Apple phone with a screen bigger than the SE, but unwilling to spend close to $1000 on an iPhone 11, the XR might be a good choice for you.

Cons

  • LCD screen: Springing $800 for an LCD screen phone in late 2020 seems like a tough sell to us. But at least it’s not like spending $950 for an LCD screen on the iPhone 11!
  • Only a single camera in the back: The iPhone XR features only a single 12 MP rear camera and does not support night mode. So, depending on your photography needs, this may or may not suit you.
  • No headphone jack: While most users don't care about wired headphones anymore, for those of us who do, the lack of 3.5mm jack can be a daily annoyance. So if you are “trading up” to a phone without a headphone jack, be aware.
