Samsung positioned the Galaxy J1 as a compact entry-level phone built around essentials rather than extras. Its 4.3-inch TFT display uses a 480 x 800 resolution, which keeps the handset small and easy to handle, and the familiar plastic body includes a removable 1850 mAh battery and a dedicated home key below the screen. At 129 x 68.2 x 8.9 mm and 122 g, it stays light and pocket-friendly. Performance is modest, with a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage, but the phone also supports microSD expansion for more room for photos, music and basic apps. The software shipped with Android 4.4.4 and Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, reflecting a straightforward smartphone experience from its era. On the camera side, the Galaxy J1 pairs a 5 MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash with a 2 MP front camera, and it can record video at up to 720p. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS, microUSB 2.0, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, FM radio, and single-SIM or dual-SIM support depending on the version.

Pros

  • Price: If you can get your hands on a J1, it shouldn't cost you much (if anything).
  • Vintage Samsung feel: The J1 looks and feels like a classic Samsung device, from its compact design to its three buttons on the bottom.

Cons

  • Size: The J1 is tiny. Texting may prove difficult and your thumbs could cramp up!
  • Specs: The J1's resolution, camera and overall performance weren't great when it launched in 2015. Years later, it hasn't aged particularly well.
