Apple’s iPhone SE keeps a familiar compact format while pairing it with hardware that was notably stronger than most phones of its size at release. Its 4.7-inch Retina HD LCD display uses True Tone, wide colour support and Haptic Touch, and the body combines glass with an aluminium frame, an IP67 rating, and the classic Home button with Touch ID. Inside, the A13 Bionic chip gives the phone a quick, fluid feel for everyday apps, photography and gaming, with storage options of 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. The rear camera uses a single 12MP wide sensor with optical image stabilization, Smart HDR, Portrait mode and 4K video recording at up to 60 fps, while the 7MP front camera supports Portrait Lighting and 1080p video. Battery figures are modest by current standards, but the phone supports fast wired charging and Qi wireless charging. Connectivity includes Gigabit-class LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and Dual SIM support through nano-SIM plus eSIM. At 148 g and 7.3 mm thick, it remains one of the more pocket-friendly iPhones built around a modern Apple chip.

Pros

  • Compact design: The iPhone SE line has been known for being a powerful, compact phone and in this iteration, this continues to be true. It fits comfortably into most pockets and is comfortable for one-handed use.
  • Powerful chip and good camera: Despite being a budget phone, the iPhone SE features Apple’s latest A13 bionic chip which is said to be the fastest and most powerful mobile chip in the market. It is the same chip that featured in Apple flagships devices such as the iPhone 11 Pro.
  • Inexpensive: Starting only at $599 from Apple, this is the company’s most affordable phone.

Cons

  • Outdated design: Even for budget phones these days, a big bezel is an outdated design choice. Consider the nearly bezel-less design of the new Google Pixel 4a which also features excellent cameras and an OLED screen for an even cheaper price!
  • Camera lacks night mode: Which again, for 2020 is an unacceptable compromise, especially since nearly all budget phones, including Google’s excellent Pixel 4a, and the One Plus Nord, feature decent night mode capability.
  • Shorter battery life than other iPhones: Because it is a compact phone that still has the A13 chip, it means it has a smaller battery powering the same powerful CPU. Hence battery life on the iPhone SE is considerably shorter than the iPhone 11 or 11 Pro. However, to compensate it does feature fast wireless charging.
