A REVIEW FROM SOMEONE THAT DOESN'T BLAME THE ISP FOR ISSUES THAT ARE NOT IT'S FAULT;

I've had CarryTel in 2 locations for over 3+ yrs.

I am reading through the reviews and it's incredibly clear some of you pay $50 or whatever and expect magic to happen.

CarryTel has NO CONTROL over the following things:

- When the tech shows up
- What the tech does
- Your line quality
- Your modem/router (more on this)
- You not having read the fine print
- Parent company (Bell/Rogers) bumping rates which translates to increased bills.

CarryTel is a no-frills ISP. If you don't know a little about troubleshooting your own net issues (simple tech stuff like how to powercycle a modem), it might not be the best choice for you.

Know that Rogers/Bell techs treat small re-seller ISP's like crap. They do not prioritize them above their parent company. Do not blame CarryTel for the tech not showing up on time or doing a bad job.

Modem/routers: ALL ISP's, even the big ones, sell junk. You should NEVER use a modem/router combo. Most of them are victim to the PUMA 6 chip issue. Buy a MODEM only and buy a separate WIFI router for the best signal. If it's a combo device, log into the modem and put it into bridge mode (so it's a modem only), then hook up your own router to it. This one thing would solve half the low-star ratings on this site.

If the tech tells you to plug your device directly into the modem and your speed jumps from 20mbs to the advertised speed, the issue is either the modem/router issue explained above, OR it's your crap device.

Pros:
- Same speeds as the brand they're reselling (ie; Rogers)
- CHEAP!

Cons:
- Routing is not premium. You might run into capthas more because of this. It's rare.
- Pings slightly higher vs premium brand, prob because of the above. Instead of 15ms, you might get 25-30. This only matters if you're a pro-gamer.
- Redundancy is not the best. They do not have many 'backup' lines in case of an outage. Major outages occur rarely (maybe twice since I've been with them in my area) NOTE: most of the time the outage is ROGERS and will affect ALL Rogers users, so it doesn't matter who you're with.

TDLR: Want a great cheap ISP trying to do their best at rock bottom prices? You got it.
Want redundancy in rare cases (not guaranteed) and slightly lower pings only noticeable to pro-gamers? Go ahead and pay 2-3x the price to Rogers/Bell.

They increased the price 2 times within a short period unless they guaranteed the price for a year to be constant. The internet service is not bad. The main issue is the customer service which is not responsive at all, you feel that they are the only internet service provider in the world and they dont mind if you stay with them or not (they are not supportive at all). They offer a 50mb service but the max output of the modem is 15-20mb and they ask you to buy another modem if you want to max out the speed or you should connect with cable like 20 years ago!

Would NOT recommend. The internet is acceptable not great but this company changes its policy at will, bad company and service just trying to figure out ways to steal from you over time. Bad service and hidden fees. I used it for a year because it was one of the cheaper services (used a mid-term plan). Very slow and choppy. Even worse was the customer service. After I left, they decided to take my deposit and change it to a "purchase" (Wrote small lettering at the bottom in one of many invoices so it was "policy"). When calling, the manager would constantly interrupt me and at the end, wouldn't send back my deposit (they weren't losing any money if they did). Also very all over the place - stating one price to another for the modem. All this took over 25 days from the transfer start.

After being with Teksavvy for 10 years, I switched to Carrytel in March of 2020.
My main reason to switching was because when Covid19 hit us, Tekksavvy was unwilling to help. They refused to increase my speed (up to the max speed supported by my modem), wanted me to get a higher package and a new modem, and on top of it increased my bill for my current plan.
All of this pushed me over the edge so I made the switch and got the 75mbps plan from Carrytel.
After a year, I don't regret my decision. The service is cheaper than Teksavvy, and to me it is reliable. I get between 70 and 75 mbps constantly. In the past year, I lost connection a couple of times, but restarting the modem fixed it (I had the same thing with Teksavvy).
Not having had any issues, I can't really comment to their customer service. I have only had to call them once during the initial setup, I was able to reach them without issue and they assisted me with the setup.
Most of the negative reviews that I see seem to be from QC, so maybe their service is not as good there, but for me in the GTA, I have absolutely no complain and have recommended their service to a couple of friends looking to switch providers.
For $10 discount, you can use the code FA144997 for Fiber plans and FA144998 for cable plans.

Imagine putting a deposit on a rental just for the company to turn around and say you have to buy it, without a choice.

Also two days late for installation during my service initiation. Oh and that's not to mention the service shut-downs.

I purchased internet 150 Mbps and was receiving 20 Mbps, their solution was to connect my computer to the modem by cable!!!!!!
I was on the phone for 4 hours and the supervisor/manager refused to talk to me.
Canceled the service in just 5 days.

I live up in Stouffville and I dont have many plans to choose from especially something like fibre. The only fibre option would be rogers but you would be overpaying for internet.

I used carrytel for a year and i purchased 150 Mbit download but for throughout the whole year I would get at most 50 down and on average 35 down.

The network stability leaves much to be desire. I'm constantly disconnect or getting very high ping delay during games especially if another family member is on a video call. Given the COVID situation that is very common. I would reset the modem more times in a month than I would have to during the 2 years I was with bell before.

For some reason the modem they sent me didn't support 5Ghz even though the model is supposed to. I suppose they sent me a defective one but I didn't want to deal with the hassle of replacing the modem and not having internet for a few days so I had to purchase my own router.

I've definitely contacted customer support about the internet service problems and they would run through a basic troubleshooting that you would have done already before calling them. In the end, the problem would still persist and the issues above would remain.

This is my own personal experience, maybe I was unlucky but I won't be coming back.

On a side note for people in Stouffville, I recently switch to Tekksavvy and its going great.

Overall I would have to say my experience with
Carrytel has been positive. They are doing their
best to provide a service at a reasonable rate
at a time when there is a world crisis. Residential data consumption is at a all-time high. It will be 2 years this May.

I've noticed a lot of negative comments here, so I thought I'd give my 2cents. Been with CarryTel for almost 3 years now.

Had issues with the modem when I first signed up and they replaced it immediately. Customer service is truly fantastic - you rarely have to wait long on the phone and they follow up too.

I was having issues with streaming my TV show and thought it was them choking the speed - turns out it was Cogeco that was choking it. Purchased a VPN, problem gone. I'm paying for 60 MPs and it's not unusual for me to do a speed test and get 73-75.
After 2 years I was having a lot of trouble with the internet dropping and stuttering. After working with customer service for a couple of weeks, one of them said "maybe" I should look at my router and replace it. It was an expensive one, but I did research and found it does have a lifespan of 5-7 years - I was at 5. I replaced it and it's been fantastic ever since, with no issues.

There is more to all these problems than just one company/component and sometimes it takes a bit of fiddling to get things to work.

Should be shut down. Such scammers. They had good prices and so I decided to give a small ISP a chance instead of the "big guy" companies. First, I paid $79 in fees to startup my account and buy the router. Then, they told me they couldn't book me an appointment with a technician for five days from my move in date. I decided to continue with them, having faith that maybe the "little guy" would come through. They didn't! The router arrived just in time for my appointment, I set it up and was all set. My appointment was from 8am-10am two days before Christmas (Dec 23). 10am came and went, so I called the Carrytel Customer Care and they said, "Oh, I'm sorry, it looks like a technician can't come. How about we reschedule for after Christmas sometime?" At this point I was very upset. I rely on the internet for my job and I took some time off to move, but my days off were up and I need to get back! I told them this was unacceptable and I would like ALL my money back. I would go to another company (which I did and they saved the day!). They told me they can't get my shipping charges back (a total of $24 to have the modem shipped to me and to return to them). What's the point in having a modem shipped to you if the company cannot guarantee when I'll have access to internet!?! I'm so fed up with them and I hope they get shut down as they obviously have poor business sense.

Ordered it when we first moved to Hamilton. W
Despite ordering it weeks in advance we were still told we'd have to wait an additional week + for it to be installed. We confirmed and had them call and confirm multiple times that we needed a technician to actually come set it up to the house as we have no previous connections set up. When the day they had picked finally came and went they did not send anyone, flipped a switched and started to charge us. Told us we'd have to wait another week after we called to say we had no internet still. Ended up canceling and getting 0 money back from them, including nothing back for the "deposit" for the modem after waiting a month. So a great company to go with if you plan on spending $200+ on internet you don't ever actually receive.
